Vacant is a creative practice founded by Yusuke Nagai, dedicated to exploring how spaces transform into meaningful places through cultural engagement—a concept he calls Cultural Placeology. Operating across three domains—Center (space), Multiple (product), and Works (others)—Vacant engages in diverse placemaking practices.

Since launching its first project space in Harajuku in 2009, Vacant has considered space as a medium for over 15 years, expanding placemaking beyond exhibitions and events to include crafting, writing, and dialogue, all grounded in spatial experience.

Every project is conceived and directed by Nagai, who values the cultural relationships that give rise to polyphonic perspectives. Vacant’s mission is to spark better cultural circulation, enabling diverse forms of placemaking that enrich everyday life.
